Spotlight on Coombe Trenchard - An absolute gem of an Arts and Crafts Property!

I visited Coombe Trenchard in August, it is a privately-owned home and a true Arts and Crafts gem with its own unique warmth and character. Located in the village of Lewtrenchard which lies in the heart of West Devon and has ever-changing splendid long reaching views towards Dartmoor.

This house is viewable to the public only through invitation to vIsit on a limited number of specified dates during the year.

6.2 miles and 18 minutes from Primrose Cottage B&B

Arts and Crafts Gem

Tours by invitation could be your opportunity to see inside this Arts and Crafts masterpiece and all-round beautiful property.

If you can - you have got to see this home. William Morris would be very much at home here!

  • Built in 1906 at the height of the of the belle époque. ("Beautiful Age" - given to the period from the end of the Franco-Prussian War to the start of World War I).

  • The house and gardens were designed by architect Walter Sarel.

  • The house retains many original features Including a ‘disappearing’ wall, recently discovered in the main hall, and the only one of its type in the country.

  • It has a galleried minstrels landing.

  • The extensive gardens are laid out around the house and incorporate a stream with bridges, a woodland garden, terraces and walks and many Arts & Crafts features.

  • Sarah Marsh and her husband, the current owners of Coombe Trenchard, have a passion for the restoration of the Edwardian gardens, still a work in progress.

  • There are forgotten paths, woodland gardens, water gardens and the pattern of long forgotten Edwardian planting schemes.

In addition to the tours of the house, Sarah and her husband host several other events during the year when you can experience and enjoy the warmth and special flavour that is Coombe Trenchard:

1. The Annual English Country Garden Festival - What a weekend - what a show!

85+ exhibitors & stallholders handpicked from Devon & Cornwall

  • Plant specialists & gifted growers

  • Garden products & furniture makers

  • Craft makers & artists

  • Vintage home & garden treasures

  • So many Artisan producers

  • Delicious range of lunches, wonderful home made cakes, cream teas & foodie stalls

“We raise the flag for the makers & the growers whilst bringing together a very special collection of exhibitors and stall holders in the gardens and grounds of Coombe Trenchard to celebrate the start of our English Summer” ~ Sarah Marsh

2. Feast and Fire Evenings are held on a few selected dates in the year with the aim of celebrating the seasons in interesting company with delicious food and great wine.

  • The feasts are enjoyed outside in the sprawling elegance of the gardens or in the restored coach house with its transparent roof and cosy snug area around the wood burner.

  • A unique dining experience amongst illuminated trees, crackling fires and the tor-lined horizon of Devon.

3. Deck the Halls – a very special service of carols held in the main hall of the house with musicians playing from the gallery. How about that for a unique and special way to start the advent season?

Why not make this part of your winter break with us and start your Christmas here?
